Job Description:
ASU is the largest state university and for the last four years in a row has been recognized as the most innovative university by US News and world Report. This Database Analyst Senior position is part of the ASU Technology office and responsible for coordinating and monitoring the design, development, modification and implementation of databases and database environments; ensures all database environments are highly available and recoverable; provides technical support and leadership for supported database environments; provides and designs tools to aid in the management of the databases and client/server environment; ensures all database environments are secured by deploying user provisioning, database encryption, and data masking techniques.

Essential Duties:

  • Performance management and tuning: Ensures availability and performance of SQL Server database environments that support multiple critical applications.
  • Data movement: The DBA is responsible for efficiently and accurately moving data from place to place as dictated by organizational needs.
  • Backup and recovery: The DBA must implement an appropriate database backup and recovery strategy for each database file based on data volatility and application availability requirements.
  • Ensuring availability: Ensure associated hardware resources are optimally allocated to the database servers. DBA must ensure data availability using non-disruptive administration tactics. Proactively monitor the database environments to ensure secure services with minimum downtime.
  • SQL code reviews and walk-throughs. Troubleshoot and problem solve issues related to the SQL Server environments.
  • Responsible for improvement and maintenance of the databases to include patching and upgrades.
  • Implementation and release of database changes to support the application development teams in both the development and production environments.
  • Migration of database components from/to DEV, QA, and Production in support of Development teams.
  • Review vendor database requirements & recommendations, and implement optimal and secure solutions.
  • SQL Server Integration Services - Extract, Transform, Load
  • Provide trend analysis and database documentation / reports to management team to enable them to make informed decisions regarding resource management and availability of the systems.
  • This is a 24/7 support environment and will require on-call availability.
  • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively across multiple teams

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or closely related field and 4 years database administration including creating and updating table structures and views as well as writing stored procedures OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with SQL Server database administration.
  • Evidence of certificates from recognized programs that indicate mastery of SQL Server tools and techniques.
  • Experience writing SSIS packages, performance tuning and SQL tuning.
  • Experience with AWS Cloud related tools and coding.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
  • Database design principles
  • Practices and methods
  • Security/permission standards
  • Database Encryption techniques
  • Database query tools including, but not limited to, SQL Server Management Studio
  • SQL tuning; database indexing
  • Database disaster recovery techniques
  • Database high availability understanding

Evidence of:

  • Experience in/with the following: design, setup, installation, and implementation of databases in large scale environments; routine database maintenance including backups, restores, re-indexing, integrity checks, jobs, alerts, processes, etc.
  • Experience with SQL coding and SQL tuning for optimum performance of queries.
  • Experience with MSSQL and/or Oracle would be a plus;
  • Self-sufficiency and initiative working on database-related projects
  • Ability to implement and document database processes such as component migration, failover, and disaster recovery models

Effective communication skills.

  • The Database Administration team is responsible for SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, Sybase, and PostgreSQL platforms in addition to AWS Cloud environments. Any experience with these additional platforms or additional coding is a plus.

Working Environment:
Work environment is a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking. Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds. Ability to clearly communicate verbally in English, read, write, see, and hear to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
