Community Building is our Business
Neighborhood House Association is one of the largest multi-purpose social service organizations in the United States. We have provided health and human care services to the San Diego community for over 100 years. Today, Neighborhood House continues to provide county-wide services offering a broad spectrum of comprehensive health and human care programs designed to strengthen families and to assist them in becoming self-sufficient such as: child development and day care, gang diversion and drug prevention, services for pregnant women and their unborn children, food services, senior nutrition, adult physical rehabilitation, mental health, HIV+/AIDS psychological counseling, HUD-home ownership and rental counseling, employment services, social service case management, emergency and other services that assist the less fortunate and low income families.
Neighborhood House History
The origins of Neighborhood House date back to the late 1880's in San Diego County, when it operated primarily as a settlement house, assisting Hispanic and other immigrant families to become acclimated to the mainstream community. In 1914, the San Diego Normal School's College Women's Club, now knows as San Diego State University's American Association of University women, operated the agency and named it Neighborhood House. (This is considered our anniversary year.) Neighborhood House, with other organizations such as the Red Cross, YMCA, and Boy Scouts, became a charter member of the local Community Chest in 1920. The Community Chest is known today as the United Way of San Diego. In 1923, Neighborhood House was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and has grown steadily to become the far-reaching community service organization it is today.
Neighborhood House Association, a multi-purpose human services agency, facilitates leadership in communities, and assists individuals and families throughout San Diego County in improving their quality of life.
Neighborhood House Association envisions self-sufficient, culturally diverse communities, that are characterized by being physically, socially and economically healthy places in which individuals and families can live and develop to their maximum potential.
