Position Summary

The Clinical Research Office at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is recruiting for a Technical Analyst II. Reporting to the Director of Clinical Trail Informatics, this position manages and maintains a comprehensive clinical trials database, oversees the collection, organization, and reporting of complex clinical trial information within timelines, evaluates users’ needs in order to test and implement enhancements and modifications to existing systems, and provides technical assistance, documentation and training to staff and users as needed. The basic job responsibilities can be broken down into 5 categories as follows:

1. Application Support and Data Monitoring:

a. Responsible for the installation, maintenance and upgrades of the Velos eResearch System (the UNMCCC Clinical Trials Management System), in collaboration with supervisors and end users.

b. Work with supervisor and team to develop and implement testing plans for application upgrades (as applicable).

c. Communicates application problems and issues to supervisors and end users and troubleshoot solutions with the Velos team at UNMCCC and others in informatics as needed.

d. Be able to provide needs assessments, proposals, and prioritize requests and solutions in coordination with the mission of the Clinical Trials Informatics Team.

2. Technical Support:

a. Monitors shared Velos email account to address all user needs in a timely manner.

b. Works with supervisor to maintain Velos User accounts and permissions.

c. Under indirect supervision, provides professional and technical support in areas of advanced clinical research, to include population science, clinical research operations, reporting and billing compliance.

d. Determines and analyzes problems and develop technical solution proposals as they relate to the research operations of the CRO.

3. Reporting:

a. Runs weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc reports to support the clinical research operations as well as reporting for National Cancer Institute and other federally funded clinical trial grants and initiatives in the Clinical research office.

b. When completing Reports, will ensure data consistency, quality, accuracy, and follow up as needed with management to address any issues identified.

c. Will develop improved reporting processes and procedures in accordance with clinical trials protocols and then work with other management teams to implement the use of new software as applicable.

4. Training and Education:

a. Provides individual and group instruction and training to Velos end users, new staff and faculty (both clinical and research), and to existing staff and faculty on new Velos Features.

b. Work with supervisor to provide continual updates at regular staff meetings and at ad hoc trainings based on changing needs of other departments and managers.

c. Serve as a member of task forces in the CRO (when applicable) to ensure data needs are always met and problems identified in real time.

5. Process documentation Development:

a. Responsible for working closely with supervisor on the development of and then continual updates to Velos training materials, training program and Velos manual.

b. Responsible for working closely with supervisor on the creation and maintenance of technical documentation of all processes used in support of all Velos and Clinical Trial Informatics job duties.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 125 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 500 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers),provided cancer care for nearly 60 percent of the adults and children in New Mexico affected by cancer. They treated 11,249 patients in 84,875 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. These patients came from every county in the State. More than 12 percent of these patients participated in cancer clinical trials testing new cancer treatments and 35 percent of patients participated in other clinical research studies, including tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The 130 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded almost $60 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects and published 301 high quality publications. Promoting economic development, they filed more than 30 new patents in FY16, and since 2010, have launched 11 new biotechnology start-up companies. Scientists associated with the UNMCCC Cancer Control & Disparities have conducted more than 60 statewide community-based cancer education, prevention, screening, and behavioral intervention studies involving more than 10,000 New Mexicans. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 230 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Higher education and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

a. Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related field and experience manipulating large data sets using electronic databases

b. Comprehensive understanding of computer data processing principles and database construction, management, data input and validation, query resolution, database security, and retrieval methods in a complex organization

c. Proficiency with database query and reporting tools (Tableau and Crystal Reports) as well as health database systems (Electronic Medical Records systems: PowerChart/Cerner, Mosaiq, Clinical Trial Management Systems: eVelos)

d. High proficiency with general computer skills/Microsoft Office Suite: proficiency in desktop office applications and the ability to learn new software applications;

e. Experience in development and editing of complex technical documentation

f. Strong training and education experience

g. Medical and research terminology experience

h. Strong time management and organizational skills

i. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also being able to work effectively on a team

j. Strong written and oral communication skills

k. Ability to orchestrate and drive the successful and timely completion of tasks to achieve organizational and project goals
