This position will be located at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC).  UNMCCC is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 400-mile radius. One of the premier cancer centers nationwide, the UNM CCC has 128 board-certified oncology physicians, forming New Mexico’s largest cancer care team. It treats about 60 percent of adults and virtually all the children in New Mexico diagnosed with cancer - more than 10,000 people - from every county in the state in more than 135,000 clinic visits each year. Through its partnership with the New Mexico Cancer Care Alliance, an “exemplary national model for cancer health care delivery”, the UNM CCC offers access to more than 160 clinical trials to New Mexicans in every part of the state. Annual research funding of more than $72 million supports the UNMCCC’s 132 cancer scientists.  Working with partners at Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, and New Mexico State University, they have developed new diagnostics and drugs for leukemia, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, liver and pancreatic cancer, brain cancer, and melanoma; garnered 33 new patents and 117 patents pending; and launched 13 new biotechnology companies since 2010.

The UNMCCC invites applicants for the Radiology Tech – CT Simulator. This position includes:

The responsibility for the operation of the Siemens CT scanner, design of patient positioning/immobilization devices, patient positioning, and the documentation of information in the EMR. The operation of the ultrasound machine in the OR for radiation implants and ultrasound imaging of patients having injections of an immunotherapy drug for prostate treatment. Assisting on the radiation therapy treatment machines when no CT simulations are scheduled. The hours of operation are from 7:00 am until the last patient is scheduled. This position requires the ability to work different shifts based upon patient volume.

The selected individual will be required to attend Radiation Therapy School after one year of employment. The radiation therapy program tuition will be paid by UNMCCC with a contract to work as a Radiation Therapist for three years after passing the board exam. If the individual fails or quits the radiation therapy school, the employee would reimburse UNMCCC all monies paid for school.

Under general supervision, performs prescribed radiologic, ultrasound, and/or CT procedures requiring specialized knowledge and skills in support of the provision of diagnostic and/or therapeutic services to a specified patient population. May prepare and administer various chemical mixtures as appropriate to the nature of the procedures being carried out. May work in a research or clinical environment.


  1. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  2. Maintains stock supplies and assists administrators in determining quantities for purchase; performs general office duties such as delivering and retrieving film, recording procedure codes for billing purposes, typing forms, and scheduling patients.
  3. May take mobile unit to patient's room or emergency room to perform procedures, as appropriate to the operational context of the specific position.
  4. Determines appropriate methodology and techniques to use in administering procedures; calibrates and adjusts equipment as appropriate; arranges immobilization and/or support devices for proper patient positioning; adjusts shields; selects appropriate film or film printing device.
  5. Prepares patient for radiographic, ultrasound, or CT Scan procedures as appropriate to requirements; explains procedures to patients and positions patients as appropriate to prescribed procedure; assists patients at end of procedure.
  6. Follows prescribed procedure in the administration of radiography, ultrasound, or CT scans; determines appropriate calibrations and/or techniques, arranges immobilization and/or support devices, and selects appropriate film or film printing device.
  7. Develops or prints film as appropriate, in accordance with proper photographic techniques.
  8. Prepares written status reports and maintains records of work performed.
  9. Prepares facilities in accordance with procedural requirements; calibrates equipment, and prepares medicine and materials as required; cleans and disinfects equipment in accordance with sterile procedures and standards.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


High school diploma or GED with American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) Certification. No experience required . Verification of education and licensure (if applicable) will be required if selected for hire.


  • Ability to safely lift, and physically manipulate patients.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Knowledge of appropriate CT setting, x-ray exposure times, and safety parameters.
  • Knowledge of the physical and operational characteristics of radiographic, ultrasound, and/or CT scanning equipment.
  • Ability to calibrate and configure radiographic, ultrasound, and or CT equipment and associated facilities and devices in accordance with procedures and standards.
  • Knowledge of photographic development techniques.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Knowledge of sterile procedures.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of radiography, ultrasound, and/or CT scanning principles, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.


  • Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Fingerprinting, and subsequent clearance, is required.
  • Must provide proof of varicella & MMR immunity or obtain vaccinations within 90 days of employment.
  • Must obtain annual influenza vaccination.
  • If this position is assigned to a clinical area, successful candidate will be required to complete a pre-placement medical evaluation/health screen.  Required N-95 mask fitting, testing, vaccinations to include annual TST, Tdap, and Hepatitis B will be determined based on location and nature of position.


  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires occasional handling of items up to 100 pounds.
